High-Performance Building Training Program

Develop the knowledge and skills needed to support the future of high-performance construction in Alberta.

This training program helps industry professionals understand, design, and contribute to the construction of high-performance buildings that improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, durability, and overall building performance.

Whether you're a builder, designer, tradesperson, project manager, realtor, inspector, or industry professional, these courses provide practical, industry-informed training that can be immediately applied to residential and commercial building projects.

These courses are being delivered by SAIT, in partnership with BILD Alberta and Alberta Ecotrust Foundation, with support from the Government of Canada’s Codes Acceleration Fund. Thanks to this collaboration, these courses are being offered at no cost until March 31, 2027.

Choose Your Learning Path

The High-Performance Building Training Program begins with a shared foundational course and then branches into specialized residential and commercial learning pathways. The program is designed to help learners progressively build their knowledge from foundational concepts to design and construction applications.

Foundation Course

SNRG 009 – High-Performance Building Fundamentals

Start here. This introductory course provides a baseline understanding of high-performance buildings, how they function, and their growing role in Alberta's construction industry. No prior technical knowledge is required, making it an ideal starting point for all learners. The course is recommended as a prerequisite for all other courses in the program.

Residential Construction Pathway

Explore how high-performance principles are applied in residential construction through a progressive series of courses:

  • Connect: SNRG 010 – Technical Introduction to High-Performance Residential Building Systems
  • Apply: SNRG 011 – Design Considerations for High-Performance Residential Buildings
  • Integrate: SNRG 012 – Construction Practices for High-Performance Residential Buildings (coming soon)

These courses examine the house-as-a-system approach, integrated residential design, and practical construction techniques for delivering high-performance homes.

Commercial Construction Pathway

Build expertise in commercial building performance through courses focused on whole-building design and construction practices:

  • Connect: SNRG 013 – Technical Introduction to High-Performance Commercial Building Systems (coming soon)
  • Apply: SNRG 014 – Design Considerations for High-Performance Commercial Buildings (coming soon)
  • Integrate: SNRG 015 – Construction Practices for High-Performance Commercial Buildings (coming soon)

These courses explore the relationships between building envelope, mechanical, electrical, lighting, controls, and other building systems that contribute to commercial building performance.
