Course Description

Intercultural Leadership is a facilitated online learning opportunity for students and employees who would like to increase their intercultural understanding within their leadership roles. Classroom demographics are rapidly changing and consequently, there is a need to effectively communicate and lead diverse cultural settings on campus. This short course places a strong emphasis on intercultural leadership, delving deep into the intricacies of intercultural interactions and offering a comprehensive overview of both dominant and non-dominant culture dynamics. You'll explore safer and braver spaces for intercultural communication, learn to identify power and privilege dynamics and develop strategies for advancing intercultural competency and leadership.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you'll be able to:
  • demonstrate an advanced understanding of dominant and non-dominant culture dynamics, allowing them to effectively engage with and lead individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • foster and maintain inclusive environments in various campus settings, encouraging open and respectful intercultural communication and collaboration
  • critically analyze power and privilege dynamics in intercultural interactions, recognizing their own positions of privilege and working to mitigate biases in their leadership roles
  • apply intercultural leadership traits and strategies to lead diverse teams, resolve intercultural conflicts and promote inclusivity within their respective leadership roles on campus
  • actively promote anti-racism within their leadership roles, utilizing racial equity strategies to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive campus community.

Prerequisites

Take either PERS 020, PERS 026 or PERS 148 as a prerequisite for this course.

Everything required for this course will be provided in the classroom.  

We ask that you attend class ready to focus on the content, leaving work related tasks to the side if possible. As we are discussing mental health stressors at work and how to best cope with them, turning off those distractions for the day is the first step in creating a healthy balance.
