Course Description

This course examines aspects involved in the design, sizing and installation of solar PV systems. This course covers the topics including permits/restrictions, logistical site considerations, system sizing, factors affecting solar PV output and aspects involved with the CEC relating to the installation. You will see equipment up-close, functioning, dismantle and inspect a roof-top system and see real-world application of solar PV systems.

This course is intended for certified Journeyman electricians, however individuals currently working in the electrical field  with a working knowledge of electrical systems and the Canadian electrical code are welcome. This course is not intended for general interest, homeowners, or individuals without electrical knowledge looking to install solar photovoltaics.

Strongly recommended that students have at least one of the following occupations: Certified Electrician, Registered Apprentice working under supervision, Power System Electrician, Power Line Technician or their apprentices, Electrical Engineer, or Electrical Engineering Technologist.

This course will first be delivered virtually using Zoom & Brightspace/D2L. Zoom sessions are on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Saturday’s from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The final Saturday class will be on SAIT Main campus - details to be provided by instructors.

Due to COVID-19, students who are scheduled to attend an in-person class on any SAIT campus will be expected to show proof of ID – either your SAIT ID card or a government issued picture ID. Students will also need to show proof of enrollment into a course for the time they are on campus.
