Course Description

This Basic Photography course has been extensively updated to ensure that students develop a firm foundation of knowledge and skills to help them become better photographers and to prepare them for more advanced courses.

You will develop a working knowledge of your single-lens reflex digital camera through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on activities. Basic photography topics include exposure control, composition, lenses, flash photography, filters, camera care and night photography. You must supply your own Digital SLR camera.

This course is available online as well as on-campus and is part of SAIT's Photography Certificate of Achievement.

This course qualifies for the SAITMicro badge. Students who successfully complete this course with a final grade of A- (80%) or higher will earn a micro-credential and receive a shareable digital badge. Learn more

Camera specs for Photography Certificate First, it can be a DSLR or a mirrorless camera Second, it won’t matter what brand it is as long as the camera has the following features: The ability to change the lens (phones are not a good idea for the program at all and either are most point and shoot cameras) The camera needs to have the following modes: Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Program From here, it really comes down to how the camera feels in your hand but also what your intentions are with the camera. If you want to get into wedding photography, event photography or any type of action, looking at a camera that is rugged and has a fast frame rate would be best. If you are not sure how you will use the camera, any entry level camera will do.

Schedule: 
This course will be delivered virtually using MS Teams & Brightspace/D2L. MS Teams sessions will be held on Tuesdays between March 8 and April 12 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
