Course Description

Understanding Alberta specific application of the Canadian Electrical Code

This course, delivered live online, is designed to advance your knowledge of the CE Code applied in Alberta's residential, commercial or industrial sectors. This course's primary objective is to prepare Journeyperson electricians for the Master Electrician certification exam administered by the Safety Codes Council (SCC). The secondary objective is to enhance the knowledge of Electrical Engineers, Technologists and Designers within the industry.

This training covers the Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta STANDATA, Alberta Safety Codes Act, relevant Alberta regulations, and the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety and Alberta Workers' Compensation employer guidelines.

Note: Registration for this course closes two days before the course start date.

Notes

This course is not a basic electrical course. You are required to have a basic understanding of electrical installation, equipment used and terminology before taking this course.

Electricians must have a minimum of three years of relevant experience at the journeyperson-level during the five years before making an application for writing the SCC Master Electrician certification exam.

Masters certification and exam information

In Alberta, a valid Master Electrician Identification Number is required to pull electrical work permits. Alberta-certified electricians may apply to the Safety Codes Council (SCC) to become Master Electricians with three years of field experience after becoming certified.

If you are not Alberta certified, an Interprovincial Red Seal is required to write the SCC exam — the same amount of field experience at that level is needed.

The Master Electrician exam will take place at the end of the course and has a separate $200 fee payable to SCC and subject to change without notice. This exam is written at a location designated by the SCC, and the date is roughly one to two weeks after the course material has been completed.
