Course Description

Data storytelling and visualization play a crucial role in effectively communicating complex information and insights that inform data-driven decision making. In this course, you will learn how to use storytelling techniques to craft compelling narratives that engage audiences and effectively communicate key insights. The course includes hands-on exercises and projects in a visual analytics platform called Tableau, giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge and create your own data visualizations and stories. By the end of the course, you will be able to apply data storytelling best practices to the creation of a data-driven narrative with visually appealing and informative data visualizations.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you will know how to:

  • identify intended audiences, their varied needs and how to best communicate with them
  • plan a data story
  • reflect on biases that may impact fair and accurate and accurate data storytelling.
  • create a data story using effective visuals and data as evidence using an industry-standard visual analytics platform.
  • present a data story.

This course will be delivered virtually using MS Teams or Zoom & Brightspace (D2L). Virtual sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday beginning January 14, 2025 and ending on February 20, 2025 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
