Course Description

In this course, you‘ll examine different IoT devices and make a case for the best solution to solve an industrial problem. The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of objects, or “things,” that are embedded within technologies and software to connect and exchange data with other systems and devices over the internet. IoT is revolutionizing industries and societies from Digital Industrial Automation and Smart Cities to personal wearable devices, and we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg of IoT adoption. Yet, as devices become cheaper, more reliable, and ever more connected, a new industrial revolution powered by IoT is on the way. IoT devices range from ordinary, everyday objects, like an electric toothbrush, to sophisticated industrial tools, like automated factory machinery.

However, implementing IoT into an organization has wide and important considerations: Which devices make sense and are fit for purpose? Can your network support IoT systems and devices? How do you assure safety and privacy, as well as reliability? In this course, you‘ll answer these questions and more. You’ll explore the key considerations of privacy, security, accessibility, reliability, and whether a device is turnkey and future ready. Finally, you’ll look at IoT through the lens of historical data, and you’ll perform data analysis to create dashboards to manage data.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • develop a problem statement for a business pain point and then iterate based on new information
  • assess a business problem to determine which IoT technologies could best solve the problem
  • recommend protocols and networks needed to implement an IoT solution to a business problem
  • evaluate cloud platforms and their capabilities when implementing IoT technologies
  • recommend data management practices for a given industry-related data set using data flows and performing data cleansing
  • develop dashboards that provide the right insights for decision-making.
