Course Description

Are you eager to learn more about project management and gain the skills to lead successful projects with confidence?

Join our comprehensive 23-hour course designed to immerse you in the essential concepts and principles of project management, based on the latest edition of the Project Management Institute’s (PMI's) A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). This course covers the 12 Principles of Project Management, providing you with the key tools and templates to effectively initiate, plan, execute and close projects. You’ll learn how to deliver value through effective leadership and communication, a crucial skill set for any successful project manager. This course is a great starting point toward mastering project management through our six-course Project Management certificate program.

Register for our online asynchronous format if you need a more flexible, independent approach to learning. Register for our in-person, classroom-based or virtual options if you prefer learning in a social setting. Regardless of format, you'll get access to engaging online content and assessments and tap into the expert guidance of our industry-trained instructor who will ensure you get the most from this applied learning experience.

This course is ideal if you:

  • are preparing for project management roles or enhancing skills to align with PMI’s standards and best practices
  • work in a role requiring effective management of projects, budgets, timelines, and stakeholder expectations
  • are pursuing PMI Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® or Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to: 

  • explain essential concepts, terms and principles in project management, including the purpose of project management, the role of an effective project manager, the 12 principles of project management and the eight project performance domains
  • explain key concepts in project initiation, including the project life cycle and the spectrum of development approaches from predictive to agile
  • describe the basic elements of agile project management
  • create essential documents to support project initiation, including a project charter, stakeholder analysis and project communications plan
  • develop the essential elements of a project plan and project planning documents, including requirements lists, scope statements and work breakdown structures
  • use the project scope to develop schedule and cost baselines and identify, rank and treat project risks and establish contingency plans
  • guide your project through execution using the project management plan while managing change and implementing risk contingency plan
  • track and report progress to key stakeholders through effective tracking and communication procedures, techniques and documentation
  • explain the essential components and artifacts of project close-out, including formal acceptance, the close-out report and a lessons-learned.

You’ll demonstrate your skill and knowledge acquisition through four assignments. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.

Course completion: Upon successful completion of this non-credit course, you’ll receive an electronic copy of your official transcript. You’ll also be able to self-print a proof of completion document from your Continuing Education student account. There is also the opportunity to earn a SAITMicro digital badge, if you have met the earning criteria. Complete all courses required for the Project Management Certificate of Completion to receive your SAIT certificate credential.

This course may be used toward educational prerequisites for attaining PMI certifications or toward professional development units (PDUs) to maintain certifications. Additional education, exams and/or work experience requirements may apply.
