Mass timber is transforming Canada’s construction industry as a versatile low-carbon alternative to traditional materials like concrete and steel. Recognized for its sustainability and architectural appeal, mass timber is an ideal choice for projects that prioritize both performance and environmental responsibility. Our Sustainable Mass Timber Construction and Design Certificate of Completion provides practical knowledge in mass timber, positioning you to enter and excel in one of Canada’s fastest-growing construction sectors.
You'll explore:
- mass timber manufacturing, building systems and applications
- sustainable forestry, life cycle analysis and environmental impact assessment
- project phases, team dynamics and safety in mass timber construction
- advanced design principles, biophilic design, BIM technology and cost estimation.
Led by industry-experienced instructors, this self-paced online program features three interactive micro-credential courses, each designed to foster effective learning with practical assignments, engaging discussions and essential tools and resources. Upon completing the program, you'll be ready to apply your new knowledge and skills to real-world discussions, presentations, proposals and projects—empowering you to unlock your innovative potential.
This program is ideal if you:
- work in construction or skilled trades, project management or compliance and want to develop practical mass timber expertise
- are a sustainability or environmental specialist assessing materials for reduced carbon footprint
- want to expand into mass timber design and construction to enhance your current or future career prospects
- seek advanced technical knowledge in BIM, cost estimation and modular design for mass timber.

There are no specific admission requirements (academic and/or work experience). Any industry-related experience you already have will be beneficial.
Delivery formats: For your convenience, we deliver courses in this program in scheduled online asynchronous format. Learn more about our delivery formats.
Micro-credentials: Each course in this program is eligible for a SAITMicro digital badge, a great way to communicate your accomplishments and skills through your social networks. Learn more about SAITMicro.
Program completion: This program can be completed in as little as six to 12 months part-time (subject to course availability) and up to three years. A non-credit SAIT Certificate of Completion and transcript will be electronically issued to you upon successful completion of all three courses. Learn more about SAIT credentials.
If you're pursuing the full certificate, complete CNST-023 first. Take the remaining courses as listed, taking note of prerequisites We recommend registering as soon as possible (7–14 days in advance of the course start date). Payment is required by Visa or Mastercard upon registration.

Once you’ve registered, we’ll automatically attach the certificate course requirements to your Continuing Education student account in the My Certificates and Designations tab where you can track your progression to completion.
