Course Description

Learn how to navigate the changing landscape of the graphic design industry and how to find your place within it. This course helps you build a strong foundation of branding principles, explore key marketing and advertising philosophies, and develop your own approach to design and brand identity. Discover the processes involved in the design of corporate logos, colour palette selection, type, symbols, branding elements, and stationery as you explore the design process from concept to completion. Experience the hands-on production of brand identity systems, beginning with analysis through to file output, using industry-standard prepress techniques and learn how to launch a career in this exciting industry.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • use and discuss important industry documents, including Requests for Proposals (RPFs) and Design Proposals
  • apply and develop elements of brand identity in relation to graphic design
  • explain key business, marketing, and advertising strategies, philosophies and best practices
  • explain the value of using a “Designer’s Toolkit” and demonstrate personal and professional ethics in the graphic design industry
  • effectively proof-read documents to enhance your workflow and your professional reputation
  • engage effectively and professionally with clients by examining client/designer relationships, portfolios and resumes
  • demonstrate acquired professional skills through the creation of a graphic design project and defense of project work.

Prerequisites

Strongly Recommended: DSGN 010 Adobe InDesign and DSGN 007 Adobe Illustrator.
