Course Description

Specialized driving skills play a critical role in the effectiveness and safety of Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs) in Alberta. Build your EMR skillset and learn to respond to emergencies quickly while reducing risks in challenging driving conditions with our driver preparation course.

Emergency Responder Driving Training is one of four required courses for our recently revised Emergency Medical Responder Certificate of Achievement and what you'll learn here is an integral part of the entry to practice with the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR).

Delivered in an engaging learning format by our industry-experienced instructors, you'll participate in online self-paced learning, virtual lectures and hands-on, in-person track days. In this 42-hour course, you'll gain a deep understanding of current Alberta-specific legislation, master the art of emergency vehicle pre-inspection and get skilled at navigating and responding to a variety of road conditions and potential hazards. With a focus on advanced driving maneuvers, this course ensures that EMRs and other first responders are thoroughly prepared to drive with confidence and competence.

Note: Registration for this course closes 14 days before the course start date. You’ll need to upload your proof of age and driver's licence documentation before you can register. See Student Eligibility and How to Register sections below for more information.

This course is ideal if you:

  • are planning on completing the SAIT EMR Certificate of Achievement
  • are a first responder wanting to refresh or deepen your knowledge of current Alberta driving regulations.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of federal and provincial Acts and regulations that pertain to operating an ambulance in Alberta
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of performing a vehicle inspection
  • demonstrate how to proactively, offensively and defensively share the road with other road users
  • demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • demonstrate knowledge and ability to operate an ambulance under differing road conditions at differing times of day and times of year
  • demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform ambulance-specific driving techniques and maneuvers
  • demonstrate knowledge and ability to actively avoid collisions.

This blended course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date. For an optimal learning and job-ready experience, you'll need to bring your motivation and organizational skills, be punctual and attend and participate in all virtual and in-person training sessions.
