CNST 034 - Sustainable Mass Timber Construction
Course Description
Build on your foundational mass timber product and systems knowledge with a deeper look into the sustainability of mass timber construction.
In this 30-hour course, you’ll learn about sustainable forestry practices and the supply chain of resources for producing mass timber. You’ll also explore the life cycle analysis (LCA) of mass timber products along with their environmental impacts. The second part of this course will focus on a mass timber project, including its design, preconstruction, construction and close-out. Special attention will be given to project management and safety.
Delivered in an engaging, self-directed online learning environment, you’ll work through interactive modular content and explore a wealth of resources, including informative articles, videos and in-depth case studies. During the course, you'll be able to tap into the expert guidance of our industry-trained instructors and get the most from this applied learning experience.
This is the second course and micro-credential for the Sustainable Mass Timber Construction and Design Certificate of Completion. It is a prerequisite to take the third and last course CNST-035 Technology in Mass Timber Design and Construction.
Note: Registration for this course closes two days before the course start date.
This course is ideal if you:
- work in construction, project management, sustainability and the environment or building code compliance
- are interested in managing environmental and operational aspects of sustainable construction projects
- want to assess mass timber materials and building methods through a carbon footprint lense
- aim to ensure that mass timber projects meet sustainability standards and local building codes
- seek to expand your knowledge of mass timber sustainability to enrich, advance or pivot your career.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:
- describe sustainable forestry management practices and how they're used to engineer mass timber products
- identify mass timber producers and methods of transportation for mass timber products
- assess the environmental impact of mass timber products using life cycle analysis
- assess the sustainability of mass timber products and construction
- interpret building codes and how they relate to mass timber construction projects
- apply mass timber construction project phases from initiation to project close-out, highlighting key project considerations, identify potential risks and communication strategies
- outline safety protocols for handling and assembling mass timber components on a constrained site
- assess the challenges and benefits of off-site construction and on-site construction.
You’ll demonstrate your knowledge acquisition through online discussion board posts and five written assignments. This online course is structured and guided. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.
