Course Description

This 200-hour in-person lab is for students who have completed the 4th Class Power Engineering Theory Courses but do not have the six months experience necessary to write the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) 4th Class exam.

Gain valuable hands-on instruction in boiler construction and design, parts and fittings, operations, feedwater treatment, piping and valves, prime movers, pumps and compressors, controls and instrumentation, heating boilers, heating systems and heating boiler controls.

You'll also learn about compression refrigeration systems, psychometrics of air, boiler maintenance, electricity, how to operate a zeolite softener, the Coppus Turbine and generator unit and variable speed pumps.

Note: 100% attendance is required to qualify to write the competency tests. It is a requirement of the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) that 100% attendance is compulsory.

Notes

Students are required to take an online Safety Orientation course (SAFE 160) prior to starting the course and provide printed proof of completion on the first day of the lab.

 

Prerequisites

PWEN 002 and PWEN 112  are the mandatory requirements for this course. You are required to show proof of completion by emailing conedadvising@sait.ca. Students are required to take an online Safety Orientation course (SAFE 160) prior to starting the course.

 

Recommendations

It is recommended that students have a minimum of Grade 11 Math, Physics and English.
