Course Description

Build on the knowledge you gained in AUDI-018 Lighting 1: Fundamentals and get ready to further explore the capabilities of advanced lighting systems. This course provides you with the skills necessary to configure, design and operate digital lighting systems. You’ll dive deeper into creating lighting cues and effects and learn how these can be used to enhance your event. You'll gain a basic understanding of the architecture of lighting networks. Additionally, you'll explore how lighting design relates to the other design fields within a show and how to interpret and create lighting plots.

We’ll provide lighting fixtures, lighting consoles, ETC Nomad dongle and safety equipment needed to access lighting for this course. We’ll also provide access to the EOS Family Console software (ETC). All supporting course materials are included and accessible in the Brightspace (D2L) learning platform. You’ll need to purchase/bring the following items: C-wrench, heat-resistant work gloves, a CSA-approved hard hat, CSA-approved safety shoes, and one USB stick (minimum 32GB) for use in class throughout the course.

Note: Registration for this course closes two days before the course start date.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • design, build and operate a temporary and a permanent lighting system 
  • understand the capabilities of a lighting console and intelligent lighting fixtures 
  • operate a lighting console efficiently 
  • understand cue lists and their use 
  • understand groups and their uses within a lighting console 
  • integrate lighting design with set design 
  • integrate lighting design with costume design 
  • understand how to interpret and build a lighting plot and lighting schedule. 

You’ll demonstrate your skill and knowledge acquisition through coursework and assessments during class time. 100% punctuality, attendance and participation in all classes on campus is required for an optimal learning and job-ready experience.
