Course Description

This 12-hour course introduces you to High-Performance residential design and construction practices. You'll examine principles and standards of high-performance homes, including related building science concepts and existing home construction codes. You'll also explore how high-performance homes differ from traditional code-minimum homes, the benefits of high-performance homes and how to identify a high-performance home through verification methods.

This course is delivered in online (asynchronous) and virtual (synchronous) formats. Learn more about our delivery formats. All course materials are included and accessible in the Brightspace (D2L) learning platform from your computer.

Note: Registration for this course closes two days before the course start date.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • outline high-performance principles and standards 
  • explain Canada’s current and future building performance goals 
  • describe the key principles of high-performance design and construction 
  • describe how high-performance homes are verified and measured 
  • explain the benefits of designing and constructing a high-performance building. 

You’ll demonstrate your skill and knowledge acquisition through two unit quizzes, one assignment and one final exam. You’ll complete eight hours of online independent study within a structured and guided online component in Brightspace (D2L) supplemented with four, one-hour virtual sessions. Full attendance at these virtual sessions is mandatory. The sessions will not be recorded. All coursework must be completed as per the course schedule and no later than the course end date.
